Creative Writing Week 1

Eyemouth Library Creative Writing Group

If you could describe yourself as the weather right now, what would it be? And how you feel now

Changeable! Uncertain but positive. Temperate. Clouding over somewhat later on. Mildly anxious but paradoxically content and hopeful for the days ahead.

When you are writing:

W.R.I.T.E

What to write about

Reflect on it

Investigate your thoughts and feelings - as if noone is reading.

Timing - 5-15 minutes is enough at a time

Exit by reading what you've written, reflect on it

Content of Writing, Draw on:

  • Memories

  • Dreams

  • Free Writing

  • Words or Objects

The house on the lake:

Picturesque scene showing traditional cottage set on the banks of a river or lake. Clear blue skies hint of sun casting a shadow over the trees next to the cottage. A red motorboat is moored on the water and the hills climb high above the cottage.

The weather is closing in for the evening. I'm using the last minutes of dusk to chop wood to feed the fire. There is a feeling of isolation which is embraced, taking in the scenery in a state of contemplation. Memories flood back of past settings of similar serenity, in sync with the setting of the sun and the gathering darkness.

Standing in another man's grave - Iain Rankin

Edinburgh again. Long tailbacks into the city. A forty mile per hour limit enforced by average speed cameras. Bloody roadworks. And then, as he entered the city itself, signs warning him about the tram project with its diversions and road closures.

  • This reading reminds me that I was reading this book when the tram project was still grinding on with all its controversy.

  • Rebus books also remind me of living in Edinburgh, the streets, places, sounds and faces. Fond and melancholic memories.

I was told....

I was told how to solve complex algebra and equations as a child and how important these were, only to never come across another as an adult. I dislike maths and I'm rubbish with numbers but I'm good with words!

I was also told about proper manners and table etiquette as a child. I hated this at the time but as an adult am very thankful that my parent enforced and encouraged this - Manners Cost Nowt!

One thing I would say to my teenage self:

Everything you will ever worry about in life you wil

l get through and survive, one way or another. Don't preoccupy yourself too much.

Task:

  • Continue writing the Rebus story - no more than 750 words!

  • Look at list of ideas for what to write and make a start!
